Union Pacific's New Midnight Freight Train - LOW28 3/5/2026

Following a job reorganization out of the City of Industry, two jobs were abolished and relocated to nearby Aurant Yard in Los Angeles. One such was the nighttime switcher that runs on the San Gabriel Subdivision, which was recreated as the LOW28. Today it switched numerous customers under the cover and safety of darkness well after the last Metrolink trains are out of its territory. I will document the train's entire trip as it ducked in and out of the tight industrial spaces found in the San Gabriel Valley. Starting off on the Alhambra Subdivsion, we see it waiting at CP East El Monte as it waits for the ok from Metrolink dispatch to enter the San Gabriel Subdivision. Power today is a lone GP40-2, nearly completely covered in graffiti on all sides, and three tank cars, one for each of the customers it will switch tonight. Shortly before it will tail a Metrolink train up the San Gabriel Subdivision at Bassett, they inched eastward, where I relocated to the City of Industry to catch them switching the first customer of the night, American Oil Products. They disconnected from the rest of their train on the Bassett-Amar siding, before exchanging the loaded tank car of lubricant oil for an empty. After reuniting with their train on the siding, I relocated to the Baldwin Park Metrolink Station to see them fly by. They diverged onto the Azusa Industrial Lead where they will spend the rest of their night. I followed them as they plied northwards on the active portion of the branch (north of the 210 is inactive), where they arrived at Azusa where they spent several hours switching Reichhold Chemicals, dropping one tank car off and picking up three empty cars. Straight accross the tracks, they also switched Veolia Energy, swapping one loaded tank car for an empty. They then shoved down the branch, where they ran around their train at the runaround track in Irwindale so they didn't have to shove all the way back to Los Angeles. I then caught them diverging back onto the San Gabriel Subdivision at Orange Empire Junction in Irwindale, before catching them rocket home at the Baldwin Park Metrolink Station again.
