Sinusitis: It is estimated that approximately 5-10% of the European population is affected. We discuss this on "Prima Pagina Salute" with Professor Luigi Maiolino, president of the Italian Society of Phoniatrics and Speech Therapy and professor of Audiology at the University of Catania. SINUSITIS: SYMPTOMS AND REMEDIES Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, the cavities located within the skull, at the root of the nose and below the eyebrows. These anatomical structures communicate with the nose through the ostia, small tubes that allow mucus produced by the mucosa lining the sinuses to pass into the nose. The underlying causes of sinusitis are varied and include: allergic reactions, anatomical defects of the paranasal sinuses, such as a deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, facial trauma, and upper dental pathologies. In many cases, the cause of sinus inflammation is a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection of the upper airways, such as colds, influenza, and flu-like illnesses, or of the oral cavity. What are the symptoms? Sinusitis typically causes facial pain, nasal congestion, purulent rhinorrhea, headache, cough with phlegm, decreased sense of taste and smell, general malaise, and fever. Diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation, endoscopic examination, and computed tomography (CT) of the facial bones. Decongestants, corticosteroid nasal sprays, and moist heat applications can help relieve symptoms. Treatment of bacterial sinusitis, however, is based on antibiotic therapy. Although most colds resolve within a few days, this common ailment can occasionally develop into sinusitis (0.5-2% of cases). Germs can inflame the sinuses by increasing mucus production and obstructing airflow.
