Laxlife Lacrosse: Offense Drill #4A - Seal/Screen The Shooter

For intermediate and advanced players, instead of cycling or exchanging on-ball once the ball is passed low in a motion offense, players may also look to down-pick the crease or seal the shooter instead of looking for the give-and-go as the last look in the motion offense before carrying the ball high and shooting or making a swing pass. In this video we will examine the seal. A “seal” or "screen" is when the offensive player drives (engages) their check back toward their own goal (they are equally as entitled to the space as the defender), usually on the defenders inside shoulder, especially up high on the defense. The player setting the seal must make it look as though the defender is preventing the offensive player from moving (best practice); as opposed to interfering with a defender. A good seal generally creates time & space for a teammate, especially if the ball carrier is able to successfully run their defender into the screen, allowing them to shoot overtop. This happens most often at the shooter position, such as during a "Delay" set-play on offense. Otherwise, a good seal/screen can also open up a lane for an off-ball cutter or a shot on-the-run from the ball carrier at the mid-boards, “sweeping across the top” with their check being sealed down.
