It claims that Captain Hajime Kanai (deceased), known as the "unyielding" captain, committed sexual assault against a woman in Okinawa Prefecture in the latter half of 2010. According to testimony, Captain Kanai would sometimes tailgate cars on both highways and regular roads, responding with, "No, no, I'm not tailgating, I'm cheering on the car in front." When the victim tried to escape, he would grab her arm and drag her back, then assault her. She testified that her clothes were torn and she was injured. The Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper also featured an audio recording of a discussion from June 2015, which stated that Kanai admitted to his violence and that the woman had asked him to get off the Henoko ship. Kanai reportedly replied that he didn't want her to lose her reason for living, and continued to work as a ship captain in Okinawa. Although he consulted with other captains of the maritime action team at the time, most defended him, saying they were "fellow comrades." Even when Kanai published his book, "Letters from the Okinawa/Henoko Protest Ship 'Indomitable'," in 2019, he informed the publisher of the sexual violence, but it was published without any changes. From here, the article inexplicably leads to the conclusion that "criticizing the protest activities is discrimination against Okinawa." When the family of Chika Takeishi (17), who died in the accident, appeared on the Nippon Television news program "ZERO," the lawyer representing the Anti-Helicopter Base Council told Nippon Television in an interview, "All operations related to the 'Henoko tour' were carried out by the deceased, Hajime Kanai, personally."
