In Jacob Burckhardt's "Cicerone," the indispensable companion for art-loving travelers to Italy in the 19th century, the Temple of Neptune at Paestum appears on page one. Burckhardt believes there's no doubt the book should begin with this building. He considers it the most important structure on Italian soil, yet it's actually neither Italian nor Roman, but Greek. Ancient Greece was by no means limited to the Aegean Sea, but extended far westward, and some of the most important Greek cities were located in southern Italy. Among them is Paestum, founded around 500 BC. Its three great temples have been preserved in impressive ruins. Rediscovered in the 18th century, they quickly became an indispensable part of any educational tour of Italy. Barely 50 kilometers south of Paestum lies Velia/​Elea. Not a single temple remains here; apart from a mighty city gate, everything built by the Greeks and later the Romans has been destroyed.
