Cold Steel: Fighting with The Saber & Cutlass, with Anthony DeLongis - Lesson 13 Cut & Parry Drills

Divide the Body into QUADRANTS FOR DEFENSE: “Combative WHY”: Each parry is designed to effectively and efficiently protect a specific area of the body. Self sacrifice shouldn’t be your first option. It is more blessed to give than to receive. ADL demonstrate the concept of INSIDE & OUTSIDE / HIGH & LOW Line Quadrants and the parries that best protect each. ADL teach parries #3 (high outside / tierce) & #4 (high inside / carte) ADL teach parries #5 / quinte & #6 / sixte (defend the head) ADL teach parries #2 / seconde (low outside) & #1 / prime and #7 / septime (low inside) Admonition: In parrying, it is essential not to make the motion too wide (proportional to physical parameters), or else counterattack will be difficult. Nor should the parry be made in a jerky, panicked fashion. Gravity is an ally, not an adversary. Don’t fight with your weapon. Let gravity help maneuver the weapon As in all motions, the action must be performed smoothly, in a relaxed, calm manner. CUT & PARRY DRILLS: “Combative WHY”: Develop accurate attacks and increase awareness of distance. Develop consistency and confidence in your parries. 4) Defender Stationary: / attacker’s lunge cut attacks while defender parry #3, #4, #5 Forehand & Reverse cuts with advance & cut, lunge & cut with recover, and Passata & cut ADL & PB demonstrate cuts, parries and cuts returning to same target with the direct riposte. 2) Drills with Footwork, both partners moving. “Combative WHY”: develop consistent footwork, distance awareness and correct timing for the cuting attack. Develop consistency and confidence in your parries. Trade combinations back and forth while maintaining correct distance. ADL & PB demonstrate. 3) Combination Drill for upper & lower body with all parries. “Combative WHY”: develop consistency & confidence with attacks, parries & distance in all quadrants.
