An island village nestled at the foot of Mount Tokara-Fuji / Walk around the island village , Nakanoshima in the Tokara slands 224km south of Kagoshima Port, it is the central island of the Tokara Islands, with the highest peak of the Tokara Islands, Mt. Ontake, located in the central-northern part of the island, and its beautiful ridgeline is worthy of the nickname "Tokara Fuji." Currently, the island has three districts: Nishi and Higashi villages near the port, and Hinode village inland. The settlements in Okizaki and Shirakigo are said to have disappeared due to volcanic eruptions in the past. The Tachibana ruins from the late Jomon period are located here, and pottery from both the Ryukyus and Kyushu, such as Kinenshiki and Irusashiki, have been discovered, indicating that there was already exchange between the north and south since prehistoric times. During the Edo period, the Shimazu clan's foreign ship observation post was located here, and the resident guard was transferred from Kagoshima. During the Meiji period, development migration to the eastern district took place. Until before the war, this was the central island, where the old Toshima Village office was located. Two companies from the mainland moved here to mine sulfur from Mt. Ontake, and railway sleepers continued to be produced on the island, making use of the island's abundant forest resources. After the war, the Shichito Islands south of the 30th parallel, including Nakanoshima, came under US military administration in 1946, and were separated from the Kami-Mishima Islands to the north (Takeshima, Iwo Jima, and Kuroshima). During the period of control, there were settlers in the Shiizaki, Takao, Nanatsuyama, and Yaruse districts, and development was promoted. There was a temporary branch school in the Yaruse district (Asahi district), and in 1949, the Asahi and Hinode districts were formed as wards. In February 1952, Kagoshima was returned to the mainland, and the new Toshima village was established in the Shichito Islands. In 1956, the town hall was moved to Kagoshima City, and a branch office of the town hall is currently located there. In the Takao district, a new settlement was established by settlers who moved there after World War II. This majestic ocean island has no shortage of tourist attractions, including the small Tokara horse, a prefectural natural monument, hot springs on the coast, and an astronomical observatory with a 60-cm reflecting telescope. With the construction of a quick-freezing processing facility in 2012, both the volume and value of the catch has increased.
