The coast of Normandy, France. The sky was still dark when the first boats hit the water. Thousands of young men sat packed together in small landing craft. Their stomachs churned from the rough waves. Many had been sick for hours. The English Channel was cold and angry that morning. Waves crashed over the sides of the boats, soaking the soldiers. They shivered in their wet uniforms. Some prayed quietly. Others stared straight ahead with empty eyes. They all knew what was coming. They all knew some of them would not live to see the sunset.
