Island of Vulcano - Adventure To The Main Crater - Aeolian Islands

#vulcano #aeolianislands #isoleeolie Vulcano island, Aeolian Archipelago, few miles from the northern coast of Sicily. The island gave its own name to all of the erupting mountains in the world. “Vulcano” was the God of Fire, venerated by the Romans. So, as its name says clearly, the island has a volcanic heart beating almost everywhere but the best way to feel its vibes is hiking on to the “Fossa di Vulcano”, the main crater with its edges smoking constantly sulfur gases dappling in yellow the flanks of the mountain. The hike is not a difficult challenge, is free and offers the opportunity to admire the natural wonders of this place and, at the same time, one of the best panorama over the all Aeolian islands. The trail to the top starts just out of the settlement, some hundreds of meters from the pier where ferryboats from Sicily land. The slope is not hard so the walk is quite easy. At the beginning broom flowers color the landscape but rapidly the vegetation disappears for a red stone that contrast the blue sky over you. The hill is 386 meters high, not the highest of the island. The huge crater anyway is stunning, half a kilometer wide, two hundred meters deep, a terrific effusive mouth actually closed by a rocky floor. Fumaroles rise from the bottom, from the inner walls of the crater and from the edge where they are very hot and dense. As I said, it is not a difficult trekking, if you are trained the hike takes less than one hour and the downhill is even more rapid but you must pay attention to the following suggestions as there is no security up there and you’ll be on your own. First of all protect yourself from the sun! In summer it is very very hot, you’ll sweat a lot and the risk of heat stroke is high. There are no shelters. If possible, avoid midday hours and consider the beauty of sunset from the panoramic terraces. Wear a cap and bring full of water with you. Rocks are shape and sometimes quite hot so trekking shoes are mandatory (anyway don’t climb with beach footwear). Fumaroles are essentially made of sulfurous gases, toxic to breath. So it is better not to pass trough. To reach the highest point, there are two options you can take without risk. The last suggestion is not for security. Even if the trek is easy, take your time! This is a place you won’t forget and words cannot describe its beauty. When you’ll be there, I’m sure you’ll understand what I mean. Many visitors spend in Vulcano island just one day, including the hike to the big crater among several other activities. It is not enough. The island deserve some days (at least two) to be adequately explored. There is plenty of accommodations to overnight and to program your trekking without hurry. This short film was filmed in 2019. I used my Olympus EM-5 MKII camera and a GoPro Hero7. Drone footage was filmed with a Mavic Air. All photos are by Francesca Sparatore and her Nikon D3100. For Post-production and editing, as always, I used Cyberlink PowerDirector suite 5. Aerial maps have been made coupling a Suunto Traverse watch with Relive app. The Track “Whispered Wisdom” is by Julio Kladniew and is available on Audio Hero. More information?
