The day the Gods die so that life can begin anew. Bhagasti, also known as Bhal Bhal Ashtami, is perhaps one of the most intense, bittersweet, and profound tantric traditions in Bhaktapur, Nepal. Marking the conclusion of the 9-month-long Navadurga dance cycle, this day is not a joyful celebration, but a solemn farewell. The earthly, tantric energies leave the humanoid bodies of the dancers, and the sacred masks of the deities are carried to the Brahmayani Temple near the Hanumante River to be cremated on a funeral pyre. But this death is not an end-it is a transformation. The ashes are mixed into the river to bless the soil for the upcoming rice-planting season, paving the way for rebirth next year. Following today, the city falls completely quiet, pausing all musical celebrations and bhajans to turn their focus back to the earth.
