#4 - Layered Existentialism: The Stories We Tell Ourselves

Much of human life unfolds through stories we tell ourselves, about who we are, what has happened to us, and what our experiences mean. In this conversation on Layered Existentialism, we explore the concept of the narrative self (Layer 3) and how meaning is not discovered as a fixed truth, but continuously constructed through memory, interpretation, and context. Memory is approached not as a recording, but as a reconstruction, revised each time it is recalled. Protective meanings that once stabilized us are explored alongside the ways they can quietly limit growth, flexibility, and truth. Rather than offering solutions, this conversation stays with observation: how stories stabilize identity, how paradox complicates meaning, and how self-awareness allows narratives to be revised without abandoning the Self. This conversation sets the foundation for understanding identity as fluid, layered, and continuously rewritten. Substack Writing: https://substack.com/@thefourthlayerp... Direct Contact: thefourthlayerr@ gmail.com Key Takeaways: Humans organize experience through narrative. Meaning is constructed, not uncovered as a static truth. Memory is reconstructed each time it is recalled. Trauma can narrow and harden interpretations of events. Cultural narratives shape identity long before conscious choice. Ego stabilizes meaning but can resist revision. Protective meanings may limit growth over time. Awareness allows narratives to remain flexible. Meaning often contains paradox rather than clarity. Self-awareness enables revision without self-abandonment.
