Hello, Friends!!! We're still on "Trenching," the heat is on, but we're still as eager and even more passionate about sharing our incredible and rich Civil War heritage, this time in Castellón. In this installment, we visit the remains of the Republican airfield in Vistabella del Maestrazgo, a beautiful town in the Alto Maestrazgo region of Castellón. I finished work and, with just enough time, I headed there to explore this beautiful place next to Peñagolosa, steeped in so much history from bygone eras! I hope you like it and have a pleasant time with us! Thank you very much, as always, for your support of the channel, and I wish you a happy summer! Checho To give you an idea: https://vistabellaarxiumunicipal.com/... Vistabella Airfield construction began on July 27, 1937, to support the People's Army's offensive on the Aragon front. It belonged to the 3rd Sector of the 4th Military Region and was used as an auxiliary airfield for the Vilafamés Airfield. The Municipal Council received an order from the Works Department of the Air Undersecretariat dated July 25 (reg. entry 259), indicating the start date of the works, the number of workers needed, and the wages and length of the workday, all in accordance with the regulations implemented by the Second Republic to improve working conditions. Construction began on the scheduled date, and virtually all of Vistabella's available workforce at the time was employed. The construction time for the two runways, one measuring 1,230 m x 300 m and the other 1,090 m x 200 m, took less than two months. According to various accounts from the airfield, some 700 men arrived to work. The residents of Vistabella were joined by workers from other nearby towns, including L'Alcora, attracted by what they then considered good wages and decent working conditions. Male refugees over the age of 14 who were residing in Vistabella at the time were also recruited. At the beginning of February 1938, 20 Russian SB-2 “Katiuska” bombers were based at the Vilafamés airfield. Three of them landed damaged at the Vistabella airfield on February 7, 1938, coming from a bombing mission on the Calamocha railway station (Teruel), as recorded in the account of the pilot of one of the aircraft, the Russian A. P. Nikiforov, collected in “El aeródromo militar de Vilafamés 1937-1940”, Carlos Mallench, Blas Vicente, José F. Albeda and Josep J. Miralles, Vilafamés City Council, 2019. In April 1938, two squadrons, the 1st and 4th of Group 21, of Polikarpov I16 “moscas” arrived. These aircraft operated on the fronts of Teruel, Levante, and the Ebro River until May 21st, the date on which the 4th Squadron of Group 21 was finally evacuated due to the advance of García Valiño's troops, who finally occupied Vistabella on June 3rd, 1938. At "TRINCHEREANDO," we are history lovers, and especially of our most recent war history, the Spanish Civil War. In our Active Tourism company, "Espadán Aventuras," we have designed a wide range of itineraries, which we will call "The War Routes." In our videos, we carry out a series of explorations in search of vestiges of the Spanish Civil War, which pass through the most emblematic places where events of great military importance took place, along the so-called XYZ Line. The Republican defensive line, whose purpose was the staunch defense of Valencia. This line covered a vast area, stretching from Almenara (Castellón) to Santa Cruz de Moya (Cuenca). It is equipped with 14 resistance centers, which we have visited over the years, six of which are in the Alto Palancia region. Our intention is also to promote the rich historical heritage of the Civil War in the Valencian Community and Teruel. We are not historians, but we are great historians with great passion, who have documented and visited "in situ" the places where these events that shaped our history took place. We hope you enjoy our publications, and that we can enjoy both nature and our history together. Thank you for watching the video and subscribing to the channel. A hug
