The Whisky Priests, Cambridge Folk Festival, England, 29th July 1990

The Whisky Priests, live on Main Stage 1, at Cambridge Folk Festival, England, on 29th July 1990. Filmed by Anglia Television. The band played 4 sets at the 1990 Cambridge Folk Festival - a riotous 'show-stealing' performance on Main Stage 2 on the evening of 28th July 1990 when extra security had to be called in to deal with the unprecedented audience surge at the front of the stage; a more sedate show to the early risers on Main Stage 1 on the morning of 29th July; an unannounced 'surprise' performance in the Club Tent on the afternoon of 29th July; and another 'show-stealing' performance on Main Stage 1 (again) on the evening of 29th July. Sadly, the only known video recording of The Whisky Priests at the festival is from the band's lesser of their 4 performances, on Main Stage 1 on the morning of 29th July, from which this video clip is taken. Despite the fact that the band was fielding a scratch line-up, with previous ex-members Pete French & Steve Green being recalled at extremely short notice to cover for sudden line-up departures, Colin Irwin, writing for the Guardian about the festival, hailed The Whisky Priests as "the stars of the weekend" and predicted that the band was destined for great things and would be the 'next big thing'. Sure enough, on the back of their success at the festival, the band was courted by several big labels, including Sony BMG, EMI, Arista, and others, only for the band's career to be scuppered by what eventually became a 3-year legal battle with their record label of the time, ending in the High Court.
