A school that just opened last year! A rare sight nationwide This time, we visited... Japan Aviation High School Hokkaido Branch This school, which just opened last April, is unique nationwide in that it has an "Aviation Department." Its first- and second-year students, primarily aspiring to a career in the aviation industry, attend school. The first thing that catches your eye is the striking, colorful scarf on their uniforms. We spoke to the students. Announcer Yonaga: "Do you bring your own scarf?" Kitajima: "I buy one when I enroll. They have blue and pink, and I usually buy one at first." Kitajima: "There are lots of other scarves available at the convenience store, and I buy my own later." Apparently, they customize their scarves to suit their own tastes. Many students at this school aspire to become cabin attendants. Abe is one of them, but why? Abe: "When I studied abroad in my third year of junior high, I missed my flight because I had a visa mishap. An ANA flight attendant helped me out, and that's when I decided I wanted to become a flight attendant, so I enrolled in this school." Yonaga: "Do you even remember her face?" Abe: "I remember her very well." Abe lives in the school dormitory. Abe: "The great thing about the dormitory is that it's so close to the school, so even if I oversleep, I can still make it on time. We have breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the cafeteria, and they're so delicious, I always eat a lot." At this school, all students, including those attending university, eat the same menu at lunchtime. Today's menu is... here! Full-scale practical training using real engines and small aircraft. Some students aim for careers like these in the aviation industry. Suzuki: "I've always dreamed of working in ground handling, but as I took classes I realized that maintenance was pretty interesting as well." Ground handling involves loading cargo onto airplanes and guiding them. At the Hokkaido Aviation High School, full-scale training is conducted using real engines, small aircraft, towing cars, and more. So, what Suzuki is working hard on outside of his studies... Suzuki: "I practice a martial art called Shorinji Kempo, which is unrelated to school. I'm planning to compete in the prefectural tournament around autumn..." Suzuki: "It's a personal thing, and it has nothing to do with club activities, so I haven't told anyone." Announcer Yonaga: "What's your favorite combination?" Suzuki: "There's a swastika..." Suzuki: "First, you jump over their face, then their stomach opens, so you brush it off. Then they come with a punch, so you duck under it... Then they punch you high and then they punch you low, and you block them, then you punch and kick..." A tragedy occurred during club activities in the winter... For Nagashima, a member of the golf club, a tragedy occurred this winter... Nagashima: "There's a practice field on campus. It was winter, and the clubs were really cold and stiff. I swung them with all my might and hit them in weird places." Nagashima: "My club broke." I shared my passion and started a calligraphy club! At this high school, which opened last year, some students have even started their own clubs. Hiehata: "I'm in the calligraphy club. Someone said, 'I want to do this,' so the teachers and I started a club together." Yonaga: "How many members are there?" Hiehata: "Right now, there are two." Hiehata: "I'd like to increase the number of members someday and have everyone write on a big piece of paper together." Iwai is another member of the calligraphy club. Yonaga: "What do you think about when you're writing calligraphy?" Iwai: "I try to think about how long the calligraphy should be so that I can write it exactly like the example." So, what is Iwai proud of about this school? Iwai: "We have a library that only has English books. We have a program called 'extensive reading,' where we read English books in class." What are the "mockups" that are so popular among students? Another attraction mentioned by many students is... Kudo: "We have practical training using facilities called 'mockups.'" A "mockup" is a facility that uses a real airplane fuselage. The practical training here is very popular among students. The teacher in charge of the class that day was a current flight attendant and a graduate of the university. The students looked serious as they practiced their dream job using real equipment.
