It was fierce and aggressive, reaching high speeds, and was one of the smallest raptor species. This predator roamed the forests of the Cretaceous period hunting mammals or small herbivorous dinosaurs, killing and devouring them. The victims were terrified and had little chance of escape. The long, sharp claw on each hind foot reached 11cm and was turned inwards, used to wound and tear its prey. Living primarily in Mongolia, the Velociraptor belonged to a family of dangerous and cunning hunters. This animal had the appearance of a lizard, both in skin and shape, but moved with the speed and intelligence of a leopard. It had a 16cm head and an elongated snout. The Velociraptor possessed a clavicle, which was uncommon in other dinosaurs. This gave its arms strength to grip its prey more firmly. This animal was clever enough to know that by traveling in packs, it could more easily take down larger prey. Before the discovery of the Velociraptor in Mongolia in 1924, scientists believed that dinosaurs were slow and stupid creatures. But the Velociraptor, besides being agile, was also very intelligent.
