According to Celtic beliefs, holly is imbued with protective powers. Wreaths of its branches were hung on doors, sprigs were placed on tables, and even buried under the threshold – all this was meant to protect the home from the influence of black magic, envy, malice, and evil spirits. Holly planted near the house will protect the home and its owners from dark magic and hostile influences from outside. Moreover, two trees—a female and a male—were required to grow near the house, because for berries to set, the female tree must be pollinated by the male. Tie the leaves together to create a talisman against lightning. Carrying a bag of dried herbs filled with leaves and berries can increase male potency. If you throw this plant at a wild animal, it will lie down quietly and not attack you, even if the plant doesn't hit it.
