๐ Bible in a Year - Day 179: 1 Kings 10โ11, 2 Chr 9 (Solomon's Rise and Ruin)
๐ Bible in a Year - Day 179: 1 Kings 10โ11, 2 Chronicles 9 Solomon stands at the peak of his glory in today's reading โ and then we watch it all unravel. These chapters form one of the most sobering pivot points in the entire Old Testament. The man who built the Temple, prayed with such breathtaking humility at its dedication, and was celebrated by kings and queens from the ends of the earth, ends his story not in faithfulness but in idolatry. It's a portrait of what happens when a person receives every gift God has to offer and still chooses to look elsewhere for satisfaction. The Queen of Sheba arrives in Jerusalem and is left speechless. She came to test Solomon, but what she found surpassed every report she had heard. Her words โ "the half was not told me" โ are among the most memorable in these books. Kings 10 and 2 Chronicles 9 run nearly in parallel, together painting a picture of a kingdom at its absolute zenith: staggering wealth, international prestige, unrivaled wisdom. And yet, as we will see, none of it could hold Solomon's heart. *What we cover in today's reading:* The Queen of Sheba's visit and her testimony about Solomon's wisdom and God's blessing (1 Kings 10:1โ13; 2 Chr 9:1โ12) Solomon's immense wealth: gold, ships, ivory, horses, and chariots (1 Kings 10:14โ29; 2 Chr 9:13โ28) Solomon's many foreign wives and the spiritual compromise they brought (1 Kings 11:1โ8) God's anger, His warning to Solomon, and Solomon's failure to turn back (1 Kings 11:9โ13) The adversaries God raises up: Hadad, Rezon, and Jeroboam (1 Kings 11:14โ40) Solomon's death and the summary of his reign (1 Kings 11:41โ43; 2 Chr 9:29โ31) *Where We See Jesus* The Queen of Sheba traveled from the ends of the earth to hear Solomon's wisdom โ and Jesus himself points to this moment. In Matthew 12:42, he says, "The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here." Jesus is the wisdom of God in human flesh (1 Corinthians 1:24), and unlike Solomon, his wisdom never failed him, his heart was never divided, and his kingdom will have no end. Solomon's story โ the greatest human king collapsing under the weight of his own desires โ makes the need for a different kind of King undeniable. We need one whose faithfulness doesn't depend on his circumstances, whose heart is never pulled away, and who reigns not for wealth and tribute but to seek and save the lost. Content note: 1 Kings 11 references polygamy, the worship of foreign gods including Molech (associated in other passages with child sacrifice), and political violence. These are treated in their historical and theological context. --- Welcome to Jesus Verse by Verse!
