The photograph appears in every Kennedy retrospective. May sixth, 1944, a bride on the steps of a London register office, on her brother's arm. America remembers a love story. Her church called it mortal sin. So did her mother, who stayed home. Of nine Kennedy children, one attended. He was dead within fourteen weeks. And the groom she risked damnation for had been offered a way out by his own anti-Catholic father. He refused it. Four years later she was a marchioness in London, and her own mother threatened to disinherit her. It began at a London embassy in 1938.
