How Does an Electric Bell Work? Uses of Electromagnets
This tutorial explains how an electric bell works by constantly turning an electromagnet on and off in an electrical circuit. When the bell is switched on, current flows in the coil (solenoid) to create an electromagnet which pulls in an iron armature on a spring. The hammer hits the bell. Once the iron armature has been pulled in, this action breaks the circuit and so the electromagnet switches off - the metal spring pulls the iron armature and hammer back again... which completes the circuit and turns on the electromagnet again... etc!
