But when proper control mechanisms are not working, it also destroys the healthy cells of oneself, and Thus causes autoimmune diseases. Tregs (regulatory T cells) are immune cells that work to prevent such a false destruction of healthy cells. Tregs also play an important role in establishing a pregnancy. An embryo that has both a father-derived trait (transplant antigen) ) and a mother-derived transplant antigen becomes a semi-foreign substance "non-self" to the mother, and should be rejected originally, but the function of Tregs establishes fetomaternal immune tolerance and enables the maintenance and continuation of pregnancy.This sort of function that our body originally has, seems to imply that we exist in a very delicate balance between self-retention and tolerance to accept others.
