Why Some Countries Are Rich and Others Poor - The Answer Nobody Wants to Hear | Milton Friedman
Why are some countries rich and others poor? If you believe the answer is colonialism, natural resources, or geography, the evidence is going to disappoint you — because every one of those explanations collapses the moment you put it next to the historical record of economic development. In this video, Milton Friedman walks you through the case that institutions, not endowments, determine the wealth of nations. Japan was never colonised and is wealthy. South Korea was colonised and is wealthy. The Democratic Republic of Congo sits on some of the richest mineral deposits on earth and remains among the poorest countries in the world. Switzerland has no resources, no coastline, and no arable advantage — and is one of the wealthiest. So what actually explains the divergence? You will examine the resource curse and why oil made Norway rich but left Nigeria poor. You will look at the sharpest natural experiment in modern economics: North and South Korea, same geography, same climate, same people, same language — and a roughly thirty-to-one income gap produced by nothing but the institutional choices made on each side of a political border. You will see the same experiment run again in East and West Germany, and again in Botswana and Zimbabwe. What are the institutions that make the difference? Secure property rights. Contract enforcement that works beyond personal relationships. Rule of law that applies predictably rather than at the discretion of whoever holds power. Constraints on the ability of governments to confiscate. Openness to trade and competition. Countries with these features tend to be prosperous. Countries without them tend not to be — regardless of what sits under their soil. The conclusion is the most hopeful finding in development economics: poverty is not destiny. Institutions can be changed, and South Korea, Ireland, Taiwan, Chile, and Botswana changed them within a single generation. It is also the most demanding, because changing them means confronting the people who profit from keeping them exactly as they are — which is precisely why five trillion dollars of foreign aid over sixty years has produced no reliable correlation with development. If this changed how you think about poverty, stay for the next video: the specific institutional reforms that produce the fastest convergence toward prosperity, and why their political costs are so consistently underestimated.
