YORK PARISH #1: SKELTON Welcome to York everyone! This, the first of York’s 31 episodes is Skelton, which is a village located four miles North-north-west of the city centre and on the eastern bank of the River Ouse. Skelton is mentioned in the Domesday Book, but its name indicates Anglo-Saxon and Danish influences. In fact the village name probably began as the Anglo-Saxon “Shelfton” That means “the settlement on high ground” and it would become the present “Skelton” under the invading Danes and to them it likely meant "farm near the River Skell” The village was historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. It was then a part of the district of Ryedale in North Yorkshire from 1974 until 1996. Since then, it’s been within York Skelton is located on the A19, which was historically a turnpike, and there are some clues as to its former use which we’ll see on our journey around the village Skelton was located in the ancient royal Forest of Galtres. It has loads of local historical importance and was turned into conservation area in 1973 In 1981, Skelton Grange, which was built by the Place family in the 18th century, was sold due to a lack of funds for its upkeep. It was demolished and in its place now is a large housing estate It’s a characterful village full of things you wouldn’t expect.
