SUBSCRIBE! - Conference summary: ------------------------------------------------------------ After establishing itself over the past two centuries as the only legitimate, if not possible, form of government, representative democracy is now being questioned from all sides. It is facing multiple challenges that call into question its effectiveness, if not its very legitimacy: the rise of so-called "populist" movements; the rise of economic powers; the rise of abstention; contestation of the very principle of representation by certain social and political movements… The question today is whether the institutions on which our political model is based, born for the most part at the end of the 18th century, are still adapted to the cultural, technical, economic and social context of the 21st century. To get out of the current impasse, different strategies are now proposed and many innovations seem available today: participatory democracy, self-organization of citizens, return to drawing lots, civic-techs… How can we evaluate their political significance and scope? How could they be tested here and now? What are their limits and conditions of implementation? These are the issues of this conference.
