The violet (Saintpaulia) propagates well by leaf cuttings, while maintaining its varietal characteristics (color, doubleness, etc.). Violets are propagated by leaf cuttings during the active growth period (spring-summer). You can also propagate in winter if absolutely necessary, but it takes much longer. Method 1 is "for the lazy" – when you've picked a leaf from a neighbor and don't want to bother with it. Pluck a healthy, succulent leaf from the center of the plant. It shouldn't be too young or too old. Using a clean (disinfected) knife, make a diagonal cut, leaving a 3-4 cm petiole. Fill a dark glass jar with water and dip the leaf in. It will hold securely in the narrow neck and won't rot. Place the bottle in partial shade and check the water level occasionally. Roots will appear in a few weeks. Then plant in the ground. Method 2 requires a little effort at first, but then everything will take care of itself. To do this, you'll need a pot filled with soil (a mixture of peat, sand, and humus) and some expanded clay. Place a 1-cm layer of drainage material (charcoal or expanded clay) on the bottom, then fill the container with soil. Water until completely absorbed. Place a properly cut leaf (as in the first method) into the soil at a 45° angle, up to the base of the leaf blade. Place in partial shade. Make sure the soil doesn't dry out. In a few weeks, the first leaves will emerge from the ground. Usually, several new rosettes will appear. Once they reach 3-4 cm, the old leaf can be cut off, and the young plants can be replanted.
