Last night I had a dream: I was getting fired from my job again, as if I'd returned to my old life, where I was afraid of not fitting in, being inconvenient, arguing, speaking honestly, and stepping outside the bounds of "normal" behavior. In this video, I talk about how, after turning 45, I began to understand that much of what I called adulthood, responsibility, and a normal life was actually fear. Fear of conflict, fear of being fired, fear of other people's opinions, fear of ceasing to be useful and convenient. This is a conversation about the human function. About work, productivity, burnout, trying to preserve the world at the expense of oneself, the habit of proving one's worth through actions, and the most difficult thing—the inner warden who continues to treat you like an enemy. I didn't give up responsibility, work, family, or rationality. I gave up a version of responsibility where I no longer existed. This video is for those who, after 40–45, have begun to notice that they're tired not of life, but of being comfortable, useful, correct, and predictable for too long.
