How to Close a Counseling Session (and why it matters)
The video discusses how to appropriately end a counseling session. The main goal is to bring the session to a close safely and with as little risk as possible. Key aspects covered in the video include: • Giving the client a heads up: It is important to warn clients that the session is coming to an end, usually about five to ten minutes beforehand. The amount of warning time can depend on the person and the nature of the session. This warning can help transition the client out of the exploration of uncomfortable material. • Summarizing themes: Summarizing the themes that have come up can be useful but isn't always necessary. It should not be forced but used when appropriate, capturing what has been explored and how the client experienced it. Summarizing can be helpful if you see a theme running through the session. A trivial summary, however, may trivialize the client's experience. • Ending on time: It can be difficult to end on time, but it is important. If sessions constantly run over, it's important to discuss this with a supervisor. Being in private practice allows for a little flexibility with time, but letting sessions run over can become a slippery slope. • Transitioning towards the end: If appropriate, you can ask the client what their plans are after the session or suggest they take some time to settle themselves. Asking about their plans can transition them to a more general conversation. If a client is in a vulnerable state, make sure they have a good heads up.
