We often focus on installing bird and bat boxes, insect hotels, piles of wood at the back of the property, seeds in winter, and water. But we can also encourage biodiversity by letting mosses and lichens grow freely in our gardens. These plants will colonize difficult surfaces such as soil compacted by repeated foot traffic, or stones, low walls, and garden edges. Mosses will also cover the trunks of old trees without crippling them. On the contrary, moss protects the bark from frost and various diseases. They are veritable nurseries for a whole host of species of mites and small insects that will feed the larger insects. A very simple gesture then: do nothing and don't remove them from your stones and trees.
