Your Brain Doesn't Make Consciousness. It Receives It.

In 1988 a Dutch cardiologist set up a study that he thought would have a straightforward explanation. 344 patients. Ten hospitals. Every one of them clinically dead, heart stopped, no circulation, flat EEG. 18 percent came back describing something that happened while their brains showed zero measurable activity. He tested every variable he could think of. How long they were in cardiac arrest. Their medications. Their oxygen levels. Whether they were religious. Whether they'd ever heard the term near-death experience before. None of it explained anything. He published the results in The Lancet in 2001. His conclusion, he could not find a physical, psychological, or chemical reason for what these people went through. Twenty years later Sam Parnia at NYU ran the most technologically equipped study of its kind ever done — 567 patients across 25 hospitals with brain monitors running during CPR. Deep into resuscitation, well past when any brain activity should be possible, a subset of patients showed the full signature of active conscious experience. A neuroscientist at the University of Michigan documented a surge of gamma wave activity in dying patients, more organized in some cases than during normal waking consciousness. A psychiatrist at the University of Virginia spent decades building the research tools that made all of this measurable, and says the current model of how the brain works doesn't account for what he's documented.
