Recreating the Minguren II | A Design Study

A meditative, silent study of George Nakashima’s iconic Minguren II. I’ve long admired the philosophy and form behind Nakashima’s work. This project was a personal exploration, a step away from my usual commercial commissions, to follow in the footsteps of a master and see what I might learn along the way. While this piece is a direct homage to the original design, I chose to approach the execution through the lens of my own practice at XYLO Studio. I’ve incorporated modern tooling and contemporary hardware techniques to navigate the build, effectively bridging the gap between Nakashima’s mid-century ethos and how i go about making stuff. No voiceover, no commentary - just the process of the wood, the machines, and the evolution of the form. Materials: Sapele Slab Kossipo Studio: XYLO Studio, Cape Town.
