In the 17th century, Japan is no longer at war and the country is firmly governed. Hanshiro Tsugumo, a masterless samurai, knocks on the door of the powerful Li dynasty. Welcomed by the clan leader, Tsugumo asks for permission to commit suicide by harakiri in his residence. Things become complicated when Tsugumo begins to tell his story.
