Are you aware of the risks associated with solar panels? Let me explain. In California, solar panel fires weren't officially recorded until 2018, and in the first year alone, they increased by 20%. But between 2020 and 2021, companies like Amazon experienced up to six incidents involving arc flash and fire on the roofs of their warehouses. Six incidents. Out of 47 warehouses. One in ten. In a single year. Do the math, and you'll reach the same conclusion they did: Turn off the panels. Many people have been guinea pigs with this issue. So, if you'll allow me, I'll give you a summary of the most effective fire safety measures learned in recent years. First. Sealing gaps and using intumescent paint. It turns out that most of these fires start from the outside in. Because although logic dictates that the inverter is the most dangerous component, it's actually the junction boxes that are causing the problems. You know what they say, cheap often ends up being expensive. So, if possible, seal the cable penetrations with fire-resistant foam. If it's not the right time yet, remember that you can use intumescent bags, small plastic-like pouches that can be removed and replaced during expansion processes. And paint the area with intumescent paint. But why paint if the cables are halogen-free? Well, because even if the cable itself doesn't burn, heat is still transmitted through the copper. And all it takes is for that hot copper to come into contact with any combustible material for a fire to spread inside. Second. Separate the AC and DC circuits into different conduits and install a circuit breaker both at the inverter output and at the point where the power is fed into the system. It's not worth skimping on any of this either. The situation arises that at night, the inverters don't produce electricity; they consume it. The current flow is reversed from the main panel. And we have a tray of live cables, and if someone hits it, things like this can happen. And third. The grounding and the disconnect switch. If you do the grounding properly, don't forget the access ramp to the solar panels. More than one person has gotten stuck. Include electronics and metal panels connected to this circuit. And don't forget the disconnect switch. A switch that should be near the main panel, or better yet, on an evacuation route, and it serves to disconnect the entire system. Because, as you know, the sun doesn't go out. And if you can't guarantee the firefighter that they won't get electrocuted, they might refuse to apply water to your roof. Which is their right.
