As an eventing rider, Michael Jung has won everything there is to win. Even at his Olympic debut in London in 2012. After the dressage, Michael Jung and his horse Sam were in eleventh place – far from the medal positions. But after a spectacular comeback in the cross-country, things looked very different. And after clear rounds in the show jumping, they ultimately won double gold. Michael Jung, Olympic champion in both the individual and team events – on his 30th birthday, no less. It was "somehow unreal" and "hard to grasp" at the time. Jung still says this today about that particularly emotional moment in his career. Although, that same goosebump feeling came again four years later at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro: Once again, there was a small mistake in the dressage with Sam, once again an incredibly good cross-country ride, and once again the successful defense of their individual title. Olympic gold in the individual event, Olympic silver with the team. In Paris, at his fourth Olympic Games, he wants to be among the top contenders again. A competition that only takes place every four years is something very special. You prepare for it all year round and are happy to be able to participate. The Olympic Village, for example, is fascinating because you're so close to other athletes. Of course, he's very ambitious and very nervous. However, he's learned that he has to convey calmness to his horse, his partner. The horse shouldn't even realize that it's a special highlight, but rather something completely normal. That's why it's especially wonderful for him that his whole family is coming to Paris this time. His wife, Faye, will be much more nervous than her husband: "He'll definitely be completely relaxed. His nerves are always the strongest thing about him; they're made of steel."
