zamek królewski w Dobczycach🌅

The original castle was built on a triangular plan and had a cylindrical tower. In 1311, the Dobczyce castle was visited by prince Ladislaus the Elbow-high, which suggests that it must have been a significant building. In the times of king Casimir the Great (mid 14th century), the complex was expanded: probably then the lower castle was built in the northern part of the hill. Another benefactor of the fortress in Dobczyce was king Władysław II Jagiełło, who in 1390 ordered its maintenance, allocating a significant part of the income from the Wieliczka salt mines for this purpose. The next year, the king personally appeared at the castle together with his wife Jadwiga Anjou, probably to oversee the progress of the expansion. In the years 1466-69, the sons of king Casimir IV Jagiellon stayed at the Dobczyce castle, where they were educated by John Długosz. A significant reconstruction of the castle (in the Renaissance style) and expansion (especially of the lower castle) took place at the end of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century on the initiative of the Lubomirski family. During the Swedish Deluge, the castle did not suffer particularly severely (although it was invaded by both the Swedes in 1655 and the Hungarians of George II Rákóczi in 1657). The fall of the castle should be associated only with the next Swedish invasion in 1702. After this period, the stronghold fell into ruin and in 1782 it was completely abandoned. In the 19th century, successive stages of destruction took place, e.g. at that time, most of the walls were demolished, from which a church was built nearby. The removal of rubble and partial reconstruction of the castle were carried out in the years 1960-64. In the years 1985-87, an earth and concrete dam was built on the Raba river, near the castle, and the valley was filled with water, creating the Dobczyce Lake. In 2016, the entrance gate was raised and reconstructed. In 2024-2025, the building underwent a thorough revitalization: the walls were extended, the chapel was rebuilt, and the terrace hall was expanded. Further stages of reconstruction are planned, while maintaining its form as a permanent ruin.
