Inside the reservoir is a small meshy-bit that filters the fluid when it's returned back to the bottle. Over time this gets blocked up and puts pressure on other parts of the steering system. To combat this, it's a fairly straightforward (if a bit messy) job of removing the fluid, flushing the system using the old reservoir and a new reservoir together and then bleeding the system.
