Incredible footage of the elusive wild Serow - a wild tropical goat-antelope
Incredible footage has emerged from a secret location deep in the Annamite Mountains of Lao, showing a rare Serow in its natural habitat. The Serow is a goat-antelope species that is listed as "Vulnerable" to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and sightings of this elusive creature are few and far between - especially direct sighting like this one (i.e. not collected remotely by a motion triggered camera). The footage was captured by a talented Lao field researcher during a scientific exhibition in the Annamite Mountains. The Serow is often hunted for its meat and its fur, and the trade in its body parts is a lucrative business. But thanks to the efforts of government and conservationists, this particular Serow was able to roam free and undisturbed, and the footage captured is truly breath-taking. The significance of this incredible sighting goes beyond just the Serow. The Annamite Mountains are also home to another rare and elusive species: the Saola. This antelope-like animal is even rarer than the Serow, and there are thought to be less than 100 of them left in the wild. The Saola has not been seen in the wild for many years, and it is feared that it may already be extinct. However, the discovery of the Serow gives hope that the Saola may still persist in areas relatively untouched by humans. It is believed that the Saola is able to survive in these remote areas precisely because they are so difficult for humans to access. By keeping the location of the Serow secret, these conservationists are helping to protect not only the Serow, but also other rare and endangered species that may still be out there, waiting to be discovered. This footage is a reminder of the incredible beauty and diversity of our planet, and the importance of protecting it for future generations. We must all do our part to ensure that these rare and precious animals are able to survive and thrive, and that the natural world continues to inspire and amaze us for years to come.
