Commissioner's Award" 16:52 "Active City Kakuda" continues to Chapter 2 Main Contents "We aim to improve the well-being of citizens by promoting activities centered around Sponet Kakuda and incorporating sports into daily life, thereby fostering ripple effects in various areas." (Mayor Kurosu) Kakuda City, known as the "City of Rockets," is a city of just under 27,000 people located in southern Miyagi Prefecture. Amidst a continuing population decline, the city has endorsed the Sasakawa Sports Foundation's proposal to "unify existing sports promotion organizations to consolidate people, resources, capital, and information, aiming to build a sustainable management system." In 2019, a cooperation agreement was signed, and Sports Network Kakuda (Sponet Kakuda) was established as a regional sports management organization (Kakuda version of RSMO). The "Kakuda version of the Active Child Program" is a collaborative effort between the local government, nurseries, kindergartens, Sendai University, and the Sasakawa Sports Foundation, resulting in a deeply rooted initiative at the local level. Furthermore, by collaborating with "Michi-no-Eki Kakuda," a roadside station adjacent to "K-Spo," a complex of sports facilities, they are creating foot traffic, expanding the number of people connected to the area, and contributing to the health and well-being of citizens. These efforts were recognized, and in December 2021, Kakuda City became the first city in Miyagi Prefecture to receive the Japan Sports Agency's "Sports and Health Community Development" Excellent Municipality Award. This external recognition of their previously local efforts has been a source of pride for those involved and has further motivated their activities. Then, in February 2024, Kakuda City declared itself "Active City Kakuda." With its steady progress in community development through sports, Kakuda City is moving to the next stage. We spoke with Mayor Kurosu, who feels a sense of accomplishment from community development centered on sports, to learn more about Kakuda City's active community development through sports.
