RAGO National Park, Northern Norway | A Demanding Wilderness Hike to a 223 m Waterfall

Our original plan was a return hike into Finland's UKK National Park, up to Sokosti – but the weather there turned sour, so we changed course on the fly and headed for Rago National Park in Norway. From Hyvinkää it was roughly 1,300 km through Swedish Lapland into Northern Norway, just past Fauske. It was a great call: the views were absolutely staggering the whole way. The difficulty caught us off guard. On day one we walked about 10 km, climbing almost the entire time. On day two the ascent continued right to the final stretch – and the last 4.1 km were nothing but descent. The route can be hiked in either direction, with plenty of scrambling and hopping across boulder fields. We did the trip on a one-night plan. In hindsight, two nights would have made the days considerably lighter. The heatwave the week before midsummer added its own strain. I'd rate this route as demanding and partly dangerous. Good footwear, trekking poles, and caution in the boulder fields are well advised. 📍 Practical info Park: Rago nasjonalpark, Sørfold, Nordland, Norway Trailhead / parking (Lakshola): 67.45211, 15.77507 – about a 30-minute drive north of Fauske Directions: Follow E6 north from Fauske past Sørfold centre and Elkem; just north of the second tunnel there's a signed turn-off to Lakshola Waterfall: Litlverivassforsen, 223 m – viewpoint approx. 67.4334, 15.8320 Parking: several trailhead lots in the area – the first was essentially full the whole time, so be ready to continue to the next Facilities at Lakshola: accessible toilet, bench, information boards, bin ⚠️ Warning – Norwegian tunnels in a motorhome The E6 tunnels around Sørfold are partly narrow and old. In a large vehicle or motorhome, stay alert – we clipped a mirror in a tunnel (luckily it just popped off its mount).
