In this story, two elements seem to clash: the author's lyrical and heartfelt description of nature, celebrating the birth of Jesus; and the apparent brutality (and lack of feeling) that characterizes the human species, incapable of respecting and fearing death. This is a false contrast. Humans persist in seeking a framework within which every feature and nuance fits together while maintaining a meaningful relationship with everything else. The impression is... that there is no meaning at all! The beauty and harmony of the natural world (on the one hand) and human insensitivity and compassion (on the other)... are but two sides of the same coin: to which we can attribute the name of "life."
