AN DRO (Trad), CUNCTI SIMUS CONCANENTES (Llibre Vermell) - Arcana Antiqua

Here is a sequence of two pieces that, although coming from very different regions and eras, blend remarkably well together! 🥰 The first is Saint Patrick An dro, a well-known Breton Celtic tune traditionally danced in a bagad. It was notably performed by Carlos Núñez, which brought it some fame! Dating Celtic music is difficult, as it mostly developed orally over the centuries. This an dro may date from the 19th century, but it is hardly possible to assert this with certainty. The second comes from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, a manuscript written around the end of the 14th century at the Montserrat Abbey in Catalonia. The manuscript is still kept there! The songs honor the Virgin of Montserrat, whose sanctuary was very popular in the 14th century. The chants are written in Catalan, Occitan, or Latin, and some of the music seems much older than the manuscript’s late 14th-century date, such as the motet Imperayritz de la ciutat joyosa, which appeared archaic at the time of writing. These are therefore not entirely new works but rather transcriptions of already existing songs, at least in part, which makes dating them extremely difficult—a point they share with the an dro we discussed above! ✨ Video recorded at 📍Saint-Pierre Church in Thônex during the 2024 Christmas concert. 🎼Credits (musicians from left to right): Océane Brigitte (Voice, Recorder) Jose-Fernando Pettina (Percussion) Zoe Klein (Recorders) Vincent Miche (Hurdy-gurdy) 📹Video and editing: Aurélien Miche Vincent Miche 💡Follow us on Instagram and Facebook!
