Dan Kittredge & Greg Austic -- Bionutrient Institute: Defining quality

We have officially launched the next generation of what we have been calling the Real Food Campaign, now the Bionutrient Institute. This continues to be an open-source, global collaboration to bring nutritional transparency to the food supply that connects soil, plant and human health. We have now significantly built upon this work and are excited to announce that this Summer 2021 are launching a lab with more robust capabilities near Boston, MA. The Bionutrient Food Association launched this work four years ago with the objective of mapping nutrient variation in our food supply, making the nutritional density of food easily identifiable, and incentivizing the food supply chain to focus on nutritional value as a key metric. Our session today will be dedicated to sharing more about this expansion and what it means for you as growers, farmers and eaters. What is food quality? How do we define it? These are questions we ran into very quickly once we set out to increase quality in the food supply. Because of thee complexities involved, defining quality has never been done before – but we are working on it! This week’s Soil & Nutrition Conference session will explore the Bionutrient Institute’s efforts to decode the inherent complexities in defining quality, including the successes and limitations of our process and methods to date.
