Live streaming vs. AI There’s a lot of talk about AI and the risk that artists—and musicians in particular—face of being imitated or exploited by AI. It is not really a matter of concern for me, but it does raise questions. The appreciation of music is so subjective that it will become difficult (if it isn’t already!) to tell the difference between a real musician and a digital imitation, especially when the music draws on established conventions, such as film scores for example. I think that with enough information, an AI could create an album of original pieces by any artist currently on the music market. The only way to be sure that AI isn’t involved in a creative process is to witness it firsthand. For music, that would mean a live performance, in real time. But how? Most concert promoters are, like musicians, looking to make their business profitable and want to book artists who can draw an audience. Today, few venues allow little-known or unknown musicians to share their work, especially if it strays from the beaten path (and is therefore difficult for AI to replicate). For several years now, I’ve been dreaming of a place where I could perform without having to do much promotion and without anyone having to make a direct financial commitment, a place of my own, where I could perform regularly, for example once a week, once with a free-form program, once with a set repertoire, once with modal improvisation, another time with noise improv, and so on, with a passing audience that may or may not stop to enjoy the music. It turns out this platform has been around for a long time, and it’s the Internet. The pandemic years paved the way for the development of live streaming, or real-time video, which served as a substitute for in-person concerts during that time. So I decided to try a new way—at least for me—of showcasing my work. (That doesn't stop me from performing on stage, though.…) Every Saturday at 6 p.m. on YouTube, and until July, I will perform a music session, the composition of which (repertoire, improvisation, free improvisation) will be revealed at the moment of the performance. Like a street performance, but without a hat and consisting solely of original music. This session will subsequently be made available on YouTube and recorded. During the live stream, when improvised, participants will have the opportunity to share images that may or may not influence the course of the improvisation.
