My Catholic Conversion Story. What was supposed to be the happiest night of my life — became bittersweet. On Christmas Eve 2024 I was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Church in Japan — one of the least Christian countries on earth. Catholicism makes up just 0.3% of the population. And then the priest who had personally guided me through my entire Catholic conversion journey told me he was leaving. This is the full Catholic conversion story of a 59 year old American living in Hokkaido Japan — who hadn't been to church since Sunday school as a kid — and how he found his way to the Catholic faith. Through near death experience videos, a TV drama called The Chosen, a job change he never planned, a Google search, and a Catholic priest who just happened to be there the one day he showed up unannounced at a Catholic church in Japan. Nothing about this Catholic conversion was supposed to happen. And yet here I am — attending Mass three to four times a week in Japanese, living my faith in one of the most secular countries on earth. This is my honest story. The beauty of it, the struggle of it, the discouragement, and what kept me going when I nearly lost my fire completely.
