Have you ever heard of Fazenda Santa Clara? Located in Santa Rita de Jacutinga, in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, it was one of the largest farms during Brazil's gold and coffee boom. Built in the 19th century using enslaved labor, the farm remains impressive to this day for its symbolic architecture and everything it represents. It has 365 windows, 52 rooms, and 12 living rooms, designed to express order and control. The main building, which resembles a mansion, was actually the former slave quarters. In the chapel dedicated to Santa Clara, there is a barred window overlooking the kitchen, from where enslaved women attended masses hidden from the elite. Religious celebrations still take place there to this day. But behind the beauty lies pain: the farm preserves a torture chamber, instruments, and records that bear witness to the suffering experienced there. Currently, Fazenda Santa Clara is closed to visitors, its structures damaged by time.
