Today's readings confront us with the pain of human history, but at the same time fill us with hope by showing us the compassionate and healing heart of Jesus Christ. In the First Reading (2 Kings 25:1-12), we hear the tragic account of the siege and destruction of Jerusalem and its holy Temple at the hands of Babylon. It is a reminder of the fragility of earthly structures and the suffering of exile, which calls us to cry out to the Lord in our own moments of desert and difficulty. In the Holy Gospel (Matthew 8:1-4), we see Jesus come down from the mountain and encounter a leper—an outcast considered "unclean" in his time. Moved by the man's humble faith, Jesus does the unthinkable: He touches him and says, "I do will it. Be cleansed."
