History of Itacajá - TO. The founding of Itacajá was due to the efforts of the Baptist missionary, Pastor Francisco Colares, who settled there in 1938 to evangelize the Kraô Indians, who constituted the majority of the region's inhabitants. However, considering the needs of the backwoodsmen, a school and an orphanage were founded. This region was, before 1938, the seat of the 4th fiscal district, just beyond the right bank of the Manoel Alves Pequeno River (about 20 km downstream). The arrival of Pastor Francisco Colares in the region quickly attracted a small group of people residing in the surrounding area, who formed the village of Itacajá. The name Itacajá is derived from part of the Tupi-Guarani language, ITA = stone; CAJÁ = name of the waterfall above the main port of the Manoel Alves Pequeno River. CAJÁ is also a fruit of the cajazeiro tree, a member of the Anacardiaceae family, abundant in the region at the time of settlement. Initially, it was known as Porto do Vau, a name derived from the existence of a ford on the Manoel Alves Pequeno River during the dry months in the region. In October 1938, with the intervention of its founder, the district was established, and Mr. Francisco Colares was appointed to the position of sub-prefect. Created by state law number 891 of 11/12/1953, Itacajá was founded, becoming a large municipality, its installation taking place on 01/01/1954.
