Is the EcoFlow 800W Alternator Charger Still Worth It After 1 Year?

No sponsorships, no free gear — I bought everything myself, and this review is based on actual trail-tested experience, not marketing hype. In this video, I break down what it’s actually like to live with this setup over the long haul — through cold nights, long drives, remote trips, and unpredictable conditions. If you’re tired of managing solar panels, fighting cloudy weekends, or worrying about your fridge staying cold, this review is for you. WHY I SWITCHED: THE OLD SETUP JUST WASN’T ENOUGH Before EcoFlow, I was using a Blue Yeti EB70 — a decent 768Wh power station. It held up through abuse and wild temperature swings, but the capacity wasn’t enough. I constantly stressed about running out of power, especially during cloudy weekends. I even had to cut a trip short once when I couldn’t get enough juice. The problem wasn’t the unit — it was me. I underestimated my power needs. I was days away from building a full custom setup: Victron components, LiFePO4 batteries, wiring, bus bars — the whole thing. Then EcoFlow dropped the 800W Alternator Charger, and it was game over. This was exactly what I needed. THE SETUP: ECOFLOW DELTA 2 + 800W ALTERNATOR CHARGER The Delta 2 has 1024Wh of capacity. It’s not the biggest battery EcoFlow makes, but it’s the sweet spot for real-world use: enough power for weekend trips, compact size, and fast charging. Pair it with the 800W Alternator Charger, and I can go from 0 to 100% in about an hour and 20 minutes of driving. Because we’re always moving on our overlanding trips, I’m nearly topped off every time we stop. Even in winter, with the diesel heater and fridge running, I might drop to 60% overnight — but I’m back to full by lunch. It’s seamless. It just works. On stationary days, the Delta 2 handles up to 1000W of solar input. At Overland Expo West, we ran the diesel heater every night. With just 200W of solar during the day, I still hit 100% by the evening. DELTA 2 VS DELTA 2 MAX VS DELTA 3 Would I upgrade? Maybe — the Delta 2 Max offers more capacity and is often cheaper when bundled with an expansion battery. If you think you’ll spend several days at a time without moving, it might be worth it. The Delta 3 is also a solid option with a better layout (all ports on the front) and more advanced multi-charge capabilities. But honestly? The Delta 2 still crushes it. Choose based on what’s on sale and what fits your needs. INSTALLATION & SETUP EXPERIENCE Setup was stupidly easy. EcoFlow includes a 15-foot cable from your car battery to the Alternator Charger and a 3-foot cable to the power station. Everything’s keyed and labeled. No splicing, no soldering, no guesswork. Oh — and don’t lose the little plastic disconnect tool they give you. It’s small, easy to misplace, and annoying to operate without. Just toss it in your center console. One bonus: the charger has reverse charging. If your starter battery dies at camp, you can use the EcoFlow app to slowly top off the vehicle battery from the Delta 2 — not enough to jump, but enough to get you started. Huge peace of mind when you're running lights or accessories overnight. THE DOWNSIDE? ECOSYSTEM LOCK-IN The one real drawback is that the 800W Alternator Charger is proprietary. It only works with EcoFlow power stations. That’s part of why it’s so plug-and-play, but it also means you’re locked into their gear. EcoFlow recently released a 500W version that works with third-party units — but for full-speed charging and seamless use, this system is hard to beat. THE BOTTOM LINE AFTER ONE YEAR If you’re still planning your trips around solar availability, wrestling with panels every day, and watching your power meter like a hawk, this setup will change the game for you. I don’t think about power anymore. I drive — it charges. I camp — it works. That simple shift has improved my overland experience tenfold.
