These were mostly various pagan gods: Germanic, Celtic, and Iberian. But the spiritual tradition of the East ultimately left a far greater mark on Rome. Various solar cults, proto-monotheistic religions, and cults of individual Eastern deities—all competed for dominance. Of the many faiths that came to the empire from the East, Christianity became dominant, but that doesn't mean it had no competitors. The cults of Mithras, the Invincible Sun, and many other Eastern religions in the empire sought to attract followers by offering eternal bliss in the afterlife. Today, we'll discuss several of the most noteworthy of them, why ancient Roman paganism began to experience a crisis during the late empire, and discuss religion in the Roman Empire in general and how each of these cults lost out (or not quite) to early Christianity.
