Research Data from Abroad, Part 2 Characteristics of Emotions Before Death in Those About to Reincarnate Most people may not understand that when someone is nearing death, three emotional states typically arise. These manifest as the consciousness of conception, which guides them to various realms of existence. 1. Karma. These are emotions of past karma that appear as the mind nears death. For example, if someone regularly slaughters cows for meat, images of the killings they performed will appear. They may have experienced quarrels, verbal abuse, frequent drinking, and theft. These images will appear clearly, exactly as they were before. The mind then grasps these images as emotions. This karma influences the mind's ability to be reborn in various realms. 2. Karma Nimitta Ram: If karma is not apparent to the person nearing death, karma nimitta Ram will appear. These include the tools used to perform good or bad deeds in the past. Normally, all karma involves the use of tools, such as knives and hammers, for example, when killing cows. Or when making merit, there will be alms bowls and utensils used for making merit, such as rice bowls and ladles for serving food to monks. These utensils will appear as kamma nimitta as the mind nears death. The clarity of the imagery depends on the individual's actions and how often they are held in mind. When the mind clings to these images, these images will affect the clarity or dullness of the mind. 3. Kaṭinimittaram: If kamma nimittaram does not appear, kaṭinimittaram will appear. These are various nimittaram, indicating the realm of rebirth. They appear clearly. Sometimes they are images that one has never seen before, but sometimes they are images that one has seen as a human, such as images of animals or humans. Most people cannot know their afterlife destinations, except for those who clearly see kaṭinimittaram, such as a dark image with a black flame, a terrifying figure of hell, a figure never seen before, and various instruments of torture. They can predict that the person's destiny is hell. The exact level of rebirth depends on the karma of the person who performed it. When kaṭinimittaram appears, the person nearing death... They will experience trembling, shivering, and screaming, their hands flailing around in the air, batting their heads in fear, as if they were frightened by something terrifying. Or some people will have visions, seeing images of a beautiful place, beautiful people wearing beautiful clothes and exquisite jewelry, smiling faces filled with joy, and beautiful music they've never heard before. When these images appear, the dying person revels in them, feeling joyful, their face radiant, their smiles soft, and they will die peacefully. These visions indicate that they will be reborn in heaven. Some people experience multiple visions, as they make merit mixed with sin, attend temples, drink alcohol, and engage in alternating acts of good and evil, as is common practice among ordinary people. As death approaches, multiple visions will appear, both of good and bad. When this happens, the visions that appear last will be more powerful, and the deceased's mind will become tense and emotional. The subtle body then departs to the final vision that appears. These three emotions occur in all living beings, including humans and animals. These emotions occur in the most rapid state of consciousness, except for some who are unaware of their death, becoming wandering spirits seeking their next rebirth. However, if they reflect on the merits they have made, these merits will lead them to a good place. If unwholesome deeds overtake them, they will be taken by the messengers of Yama to be adjudicated by the King of Hell. When either of these emotions occurs, before the mind leaves the body, a series of heavy gasps, known as "three gasps," will be visible. Some people may notice these gasps clearly, others see them faintly, and others don't, depending on their mood at the time. These three gasps are a sign of the mind breaking free from the physical connection and traveling through the seven bases to leave the gross body. This signifies that death is complete, and the conception consciousness immediately forms a new body.
