The Yamaha Energy Induction System (YEIS) is an additional intake system designed to improve the efficiency of two-stroke engines. This technology is not new and was a trend in the 1980s. Nearly all two-stroke motorcycle manufacturers, such as Yamaha and Suzuki, have adopted this system as their standard. The name varies depending on the manufacturer. Internationally, this technology is better known as a "Boost Bottle," an intake chamber, or a "Hemholtz Chamber." Among international tuners, it is commonly referred to as an intake chamber (IC). YEIS is famous because Yamaha was the first manufacturer to publish detailed research on the intake chamber. One of the drawbacks of two-stroke engines is the inseparable combustion and intake processes. Exhaust gases from combustion are pushed out by the pressure of incoming fresh gas from the crankcase. The more effective this exhaust gas scavenging system is, the better the subsequent combustion quality will be because the possibility of exhaust gas mixing with fresh gas is reduced. However, if the incoming gases are flushed out "as much as possible," they will all be wasted through the exhaust, uselessly generating power. As most already know, the exhaust on a 2-stroke motorcycle plays a crucial role in generating power. Modern 2-stroke engine exhausts are designed not only to "suck in" exhaust gases and new gases for a perfect flushing process, but also to "push" the new gases that have been sucked back into the engine. This is what allows 2-stroke engines to achieve volumetric efficiency approaching 100%. Because they can push out more gases, exhaust mufflers can be said to reduce fuel consumption. If you want to test this, if you have a friend who owns an RX King, remove their exhaust muffler for a day and compare it with the installed exhaust muffler; you'll see a significant difference in performance and fuel consumption. Therefore, many 2-stroke motorcycle manufacturers are trying to improve exhaust designs to achieve better power and efficiency. Unfortunately, this isn't always successful. Exhausts designed to operate efficiently at certain rpm tend to make them inefficient at other rpms. To ensure efficient engine operation at certain rpms, manufacturers have been forced to compromise at other rpms. In Yamaha terms, this condition is called "through-of-torque" (TOT). In this condition, engine power decreases, fuel consumption, and rideability suffer. The use of an Intake Chamber (YEIS) can actually mitigate the disadvantages of this imperfect exhaust design. This method broadens the engine's RPM operating range. For example, a motorcycle that previously generated power between 5,000 and 8,000 rpm can now reach 3,000 and 8,000 rpm. The easiest way to determine at what rpm the engine reaches TOT is to remove the air filter and observe when the carburetor emits a thin mist. This mist disrupts combustion because the engine receives an overly rich fuel mixture (too much gasoline). This thin mist of gasoline occurs when the exhaust pulse returns to the engine prematurely, causing the incoming fuel to be ejected back out through the carburetor. As this pulse passes through the carburetor venturi, it always lifts gasoline from the carburetor bowl due to the nature of the carburetor venturi. Reducing the fuel supply at this speed still leaves a solution, as the engine will be starved of fuel under full load.
