Schwartzbard was an anarchist of Jewish origin, born in Ukraine. He participated in the Jewish self-defense of Balta in 1905. The Russian tsarist government sentenced him to 3 months in prison for "provoking" the Baltic pogrom. Schwartzbard's parents were among the fifteen members of his family killed during the pogroms in Odessa. The main defense at Schwartzbard's trial was that he was avenging the deaths of over 50,000 Jews during the pogroms, while the prosecution (both criminal and civil) tried to prove that Petliura was not. responsibility for pogroms and that Schwartzbard was a Soviet agent.
